Description
The Marion County Commission on Youth (MCCOY) is a nonprofit organization that works to support the positive development of youth in the Indianapolis area. MCCOY was founded in 1993 and their mission is to create opportunities and support for youth to develop healthy relationships, economic self-sufficiency, and community involvement. MCCOY’s work includes:
- Providing resources
MCCOY provides data, information, and success strategies to help those who work with youth become more effective. - Building capacity
MCCOY helps people who work with youth learn how to use their skills to become more effective. - Connecting groups
MCCOY brings together community groups that play a key role in a young person’s success.
- Supporting policies
MCCOY works to support policies that give young people the opportunities they need to succeed. - Co-chairing initiatives
MCCOY co-chairs the Gun Violence Prevention Workgroup of the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI) in Marion County. JDAI is a bipartisan effort that aims to improve the juvenile justice system by reallocating public resources from mass incarceration to youth, families, and communities.
- Closing the Gap Initiative
MCCOY’s Closing the Gap Initiative identifies challenges to improving youth and family outcomes, such as mental health, social media use, and chronic absenteeism. The initiative then invests funding to enhance four categories of school capacity: human capital, social capital, program coherence, and resources.
